Preface
I am once again exploring Large Language Model Artificial Intelligence (LLM AI), from very basic perspectives. This part discusses a few of the sorts of things that Large Language Model Artificial Intelligence (LLM AI) can be used for, according to ChatGPT 3.5. There are undoubtedly many more areas where LLM AI can be useful. With Chet AI, you have to ask the right questions.
There are other LLM AI out there, with better capabilities than ChatGPT 3.5. ChatGPT 4.0 is one that I am aware of. Anthropic Claude is another. Frequently there is a fee required to use such. There are free ones, but I have not stumbled upon one which seems to work well.
AIs are now being incorporated into search engines such as Microsoft Bing. The big players are all working hard on this, and I don’t try very hard to keep up with progress. Google translate apparently is augmented by AI.
Anthropic, a commercial group, with Claude LLM AI, is introducing a 100,000 token LLM. A simple Internet search will give you the details. I have not looked at it carefully. Mathew Aldred over at Build Back Better has been doing a lot of investigation on AI. A young programmer I know first told me about Anthropic and Claude. A few weeks later I read a piece by Mathew on 10,000 token AI, and later Mathew wrote about using Claude. It took a while for the penny to drop that this is the one the programmer was talking about. There is a free version of Claude, but it is only available if you are in the U.S.A. or the U.K. Apparently, with a VPN you can get around this restriction.
There are audio and video transcription AIs, and specialized AI in various domains. Some are available on Web Pages.
I use the Open AI whisper for audio to text transcription with a windows10 desktop installation. It does a good job, but it is very slow, overnight slow, on my old laptop. I don’t know how it would perk up on a faster machine with a separate graphical processing unit, which would be used for computation as I understand it. Also, I am not clear if Whisper is going back to the mother ship for processing, or does it locally, something I keep forgetting to find out.
I suppose if you feel that big corporations working on LLM AI, or anything else for that matter, have your best interest at heart, you might have no concerns about the race to make money with LLM AI. I think if that is your belief, you are worse than naive.
There are AIs which claim to be free of some of the biasing done in the name of safety which epistemologically crippled AIs such as ChatGPT. The one that I tried was Liberty AI, with Nouse Hermes V2 (13B - commercial-ok) one of various options for the actual LLM. It has not given me good resultsn my limited trials. Consider such independent efforts a work in progress.
I hope these independent efforts succeed, since I consider that the emphasis on “safety and ethics” to be a code for “propaganda and censorship or “Let’s make sure that the plebs hear only that which we the elite want them to hear.” In the next part of this series on AI, I will look at dissident AI, although I do not know much about it yet.

The core ideas are mine; I beat up on ChatGPT 3.5 AI to get wording of which I approved. In some areas, I did not have the requisite knowledge and drew on the resources provided by ChatGPT. Sometimes, it was a major battle.

This series of articles may help some understand large language model artificial intelligence (LLM AI) from various perspectives. I have tried to stay away from implementation details on LLM AI, and to give a more conceptual view of LLM AI and surrounding issues.
Caveat Lector1: I am not an expert in this technology by any stretch of the imagination. I have some knowledge of related fields, but my earliest education was in electronics technolgy, and later in experimental psychology with a little bit of philosophy thrown in. My career was in government information systems, with many varied job roles over a few decades. I was a programmer, a designer, an information systems analyst, a data administrator, a data modelling expert, a software quality assurance person, and a specialist in developement methods. None of this related directly to this new paradigm of LLM AI.
