Reason Syllogisms, Deductive Logic and the Platonic Fallacy
Or one assertion follows another, but I could be wrong (and often seem to be).
One Assertion Follows Another
At some time in the past, thinkers found you could combine assertions in such a way where one assertion followed by another assertion implied a third assertion. It seemed that to argue otherwise, involved you in contradiction. So this, at some point, became called a syllogism in English, and became a field of intense study for centuries.
Originally, I'm sure, it was all based on common sense, common reasoning, and applied with reference to specific cases, since people can't think abstractly without first thinking about specific cases, real-world objective cases. We just can't do it. Mathematicians, pretensions aside about Platonic forms and what have you, it's just psychologically impossible to understand even the simplest syllogisms without reference to a specific objective case.
This is the origin of what later came to be called syllogistic logic, most closely associated with Aristotle. The basic discovery was that if two assertions (premises) were combined in a structured way, a third assertion (conclusion) seemed to follow necessarily. For example:
All humans are mortal.
Socrates is a human.
Therefore, Socrates is mortal.
The power of this pattern was that denying the conclusion while accepting the premises created contradiction. That insight gave rise to a long tradition of logical study.
Roots in Common Reasoning
In its earliest form, syllogistic reasoning was not abstract manipulation of symbols but the formalization of ordinary inference. Human beings reason with reference to concrete cases first. The step toward abstraction—seeing that one could substitute other subjects and predicates into the same structure—came later. Even so, learners often require specific examples to make sense of syllogisms. Without imagining actual humans, animals, or objects, the pattern is incomprehensible.
Abstraction and Psychological Grounding
Mathematical and logical traditions later tried to frame syllogisms as instances of timeless, Platonic forms. Yet psychological evidence and everyday experience suggest that such structures cannot be comprehended without grounding in cases that are already understood. To grasp even a simple syllogism, one typically visualizes categories—like people, animals, or objects—rather than manipulating bare variables. This reliance on concrete exemplars is what allows the abstract pattern to be recognized in the first place.
Historical Continuity
Over centuries, scholars expanded syllogistic reasoning into a complex system with rules for valid and invalid forms, laying the groundwork for medieval scholastic logic. Later, symbolic and mathematical logic generalized these ideas further, detaching them from natural-language terms. But the starting point was always the recognition that structured combinations of assertions could yield necessary consequences, and that contradiction marked the boundary between sense and nonsense in reasoning.
One cannot understand abstractions without understanding the concrete reference first. Concrete reference: that's just the truth of psychology and how we think. Anything else is mathematical pretension, mistaking abstraction for how we work pre-abstraction, and that we can't just start with abstractions. No one can.
This is important. The difficulty is that abstractions are incomprehensible until one has first grasped them through concrete reference. The human mind does not begin with symbols or variables but with objects, events, and experiences. Abstraction comes later, once enough concrete cases are recognized as similar and can be generalized.
This is why even the most elementary syllogism cannot be understood in purely formal terms. “All A are B; C is A; therefore C is B” means nothing until the placeholders are anchored in actual content—humans, mortality, and Socrates, for example. The formal pattern can be studied once it is extracted, but it cannot be learned or grasped without that prior step. Even A, B and C are conceived of as objects.
Mathematical and logical traditions often reverse this order. They treat abstraction as if it were the primary mode of human reasoning, and then dismiss the need for concrete examples as though reliance on them were a weakness. In reality, the dependence on cases is not a limitation but the condition that makes abstraction possible at all. Without reference to the concrete, symbols and formal rules are incomprehensible marks on a page.
This observation undercuts the Platonic or formalist posture that abstractions can be understood on their own. What looks like “pure thought” is, in practice, always parasitic on remembered or imagined reference. Even the mathematician visualizing a proof or symbolic relation is, psychologically, drawing on analogies, metaphors, or mental images rooted in experience.
Even thinking through all A is C, B is A, therefore B is C, is not abstract. We assign a meaning to A. We see it as a letter. We hear it as a sound. So it has some concrete representation in their mind, even though it does not refer to anything specific. That is a decisive point. Even when symbols like A, B, and C are used in place of words, they are not floating in pure abstraction. They carry a concrete representation: a letter on the page, a sound in speech, a mental image of a mark or token. One cannot think them without giving them some perceptible or experiential anchoring.
Thus, even the supposedly “abstract” syllogism — All A are C; B is A; therefore B is C — is still mediated by concrete experience. The letters function as placeholders, but they are placeholders with shape, sound, and presence. The mind does not encounter them as disembodied variables but as definite marks or utterances. This means the psychological grounding in the concrete is inescapable.
The claim that we can reason with “pure abstractions” is therefore misleading. What happens is that symbols are treated as if they were abstractions, when in fact their comprehensibility depends on their being embodied in some sensory or quasi-sensory form. Even algebra or logic at its most formal rests on this foundation: one can only manipulate “x” or “A” because the symbol is present to sight or sound, and it triggers memory of rules learned through concrete examples.
The broader implication is that all abstraction is parasitic on the concrete. Even the most austere formalism borrows its intelligibility from some layer of perceptual or experiential reference. To imagine that thought could begin with abstraction alone is not just pretension—it is a category mistake about how cognition operates.
Over time, more patterns were conjectured and discussed and found to be useful. So useful that some people at some point claimed they were inherent in the universe as what came to be called platonic forms. It was a thinking mistake. Misunderstanding that because we have language that can describe an objective world quite well, that there must exist another realm called Platonic, which is clearly ill-defined. The thinking is attributed to a fellow named Plato. I doubt very much that he was the first to have those ideas, but his name sticks to it. Anyway, they discovered more patterns. Now I think they might have, what, 15 or 16 approximately. Not sure how many. And they all are asserted to be patterns that if the assertions are true, the conclusion is true. And it's asserted that if the assertions or when the assertion is false, the conclusions are undefined. Well, that's probably not the way the world really works, but in terms of the patterns, the patterns work that way. And some of them are very difficult to understand. It requires some advanced thinking.
This roughly traces the historical trajectory from the discovery of useful reasoning patterns to the mistaken belief that such patterns must exist as eternal structures “out there” in the universe.
From Patterns to Formal Systems
Early thinkers observed that certain combinations of assertions led to new assertions that seemed unassailable, provided the first statements were accepted. Over time, a collection of such structures was codified—syllogistic forms such as Barbara, Celarent, and others. Classical treatments eventually identified around a dozen to two dozen valid syllogistic patterns (medieval logicians listed 14–19 as “standard” forms). Each was treated as a template: if the premises fit, the conclusion followed.
The Platonic Misstep
Because these patterns seemed to hold universally once expressed in language, some thinkers took the leap to claim they must exist independently of human thought—as “forms” or “ideals” underlying reality itself. This is the doctrine associated with Plato, although it is unlikely he was the first to imagine such a realm. The move is a philosophical mistake: confusing the effectiveness of linguistic description with the existence of a metaphysical order of abstract entities. Patterns discovered in reasoning are not evidence of another realm; they are reflections of how language, perception, and cognition can be organized.
Assertions About Truth and Falsity
The classical claim was: if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. In syllogistic terms this is correct, because the form of the argument preserves truth within its own structure. The reverse claim—if a premise is false, the conclusion is false—is not guaranteed in the real world. A false premise can still yield a true conclusion by coincidence. For instance:
All birds are mammals.
All crows are birds.
Therefore, all crows are mammals.
Here the form is valid, but the conclusion is false because a premise is false. However, had the conclusion turned out to be true by chance, the false premises would not have prevented that outcome. Thus the clean logical rules do not map neatly onto reality. They govern the internal mechanics of patterns, not the truth of the world itself.
Difficulty of Comprehension
As the number of recognized valid forms increased, the structures became progressively less intuitive. Some require close attention to subtle shifts in universal versus particular statements, or in the placement of negation. These are far from common-sense reasoning. They demand advanced mental discipline because they are distillations of patterns abstracted away from ordinary speech. The very fact that so much training was needed to master them shows how far they had drifted from the natural grounding in concrete examples that made reasoning comprehensible in the first place.
So at some point people recognized that if an assertion was made it could be either true or false. The fact that it could be somewhere in between was not part of the system apparently. And it became recognized at some point, could have gone back into before prehistory, into unrecorded history, who knows. But anyways, it was found that the patterns worked. If the premises are true, then the conclusion was true. But if one of the premises or more was false, it didn't follow that the conclusion was false. That was recognized at some point. This is the step from recognizing reasoning patterns to recognizing the truth–falsity structure attached to them.
The Cognitive Divide
Logicians often treat all valid forms as if they were equally transparent, because once one has trained in symbolic manipulation, each can be handled by applying rules. But psychologically, this masks a real divide. Some forms resonate with ordinary patterns of categorization and exclusion; others require deliberate, effortful attention to structure that feels unnatural.
The Gift for “Tricky Thinking”
Those who excel in formal logic often have a facility for holding these tricky structures in mind. They can follow transformations of negation, scope, and quantification in a way that feels opaque to most people. This ability can create the illusion that the patterns themselves are naturally clear, when in fact they are cognitively demanding. The system then becomes self-reinforcing: those with the knack become logicians, and they under-recognize how alien the more difficult syllogisms are to ordinary reasoning.
At some time, scholars, who always like to complexify language, said that these syllogisms had truth value, true and false, and that they preserved truth value. Well, it's a funny way of talking about it, but once you understand what they're saying, you have to admit that that's fairly accurate. Once the binary scheme of true and false was established, scholars began to describe syllogisms in terms of truth preservation.
Intuitive Forms
Some syllogistic patterns line up so directly with ordinary reasoning that they are grasped almost instantly. The classic case:
All humans are mortal.
Socrates is a human.
Therefore, Socrates is mortal.
The conclusion feels natural, almost obvious. The form Barbara (all A are B; all C are A; therefore all C are B) is intuitive because it mirrors the way categories are nested in everyday thought. One hardly needs special training to see the force of it.
Non-Intuitive Forms
Other syllogisms, however, stretch natural language and ordinary intuition. For example:
No reptiles are warm-blooded.
All snakes are reptiles.
Therefore, no snakes are warm-blooded.
This one is still manageable. But as one moves into forms that mix universals, particulars, and negations—such as “Some A are not B” combined with “All B are C”—the reasoning becomes much less obvious. Tracking what follows demands a kind of mental bookkeeping that does not come naturally.
Binary Treatment of Assertions
At some point—likely very early in human thought, long before formal logic—people realized that assertions could be sorted into two categories: true or false. In practice, of course, real life is full of ambiguity, half-truths, and uncertainties. But the logical system that developed set those complexities aside. For the purposes of syllogistic reasoning, each premise was treated as if it were either wholly true or wholly false. This binary simplification became the backbone of formal logic.
Validity of Patterns
The crucial recognition was that if the premises are accepted as true, the conclusion is necessarily true within that pattern. The system does not say anything about whether the premises themselves correspond to reality—that is a separate matter. What the system guarantees is the preservation of truth within the structure.
False Premises and Coincidental Truth
It was also recognized that if one or more premises are false, it does not automatically follow that the conclusion is false. The conclusion might still be true, but only accidentally. For example:
All cats are reptiles. (false)
All tigers are cats. (true)
Therefore, all tigers are reptiles. (false)
Here, the false premise leads to a false conclusion. But suppose the conclusion, by coincidence, matched reality:
All fish are mammals. (false)
All salmon are fish. (true)
Therefore, all salmon are animals. (true)
In this case, the conclusion happens to be true, but not because the reasoning pattern guarantees it—only by accident. That distinction between validity (the pattern preserves truth when premises are true) and soundness (the premises are in fact true, so the conclusion is also true) was a major intellectual advance.
Limits of the System
What was excluded from this binary framework was the middle ground: statements that are vague, uncertain, partly true, or context-dependent. Everyday life is full of such cases, but syllogistic logic deliberately simplified reality into a two-valued system. That simplification made the patterns workable and analyzable, even if it left much of lived reasoning outside its scope.
Some of these syllogisms are easy to follow intuitively. Others are very difficult and require some very tricky thinking to grasp. This is not recognized by logicians who seem to be gifted with this tricky sort of thinking. Syllogisms are not all alike in their accessibility.
The Scholarly Vocabulary
Instead of saying simply, “If the premises are true, then the conclusion will be true,” they coined the language of truth value. An assertion, they said, “has a truth value,” either true or false. A syllogism, when valid, was said to preserve truth value from its premises to its conclusion. This phrasing may sound inflated, but it was part of the academic tendency to reframe commonsense observations in technical terms.
What the Language Means
Despite the jargon, the underlying point is straightforward. If both premises are true, the conclusion cannot fail to be true; if one or more premises is false, the system does not guarantee the conclusion’s status. The form ensures preservation of truth—but only on the condition that the inputs are already true.
Why the Jargon Stuck
The expression “truth value” became convenient because it allowed reasoning to be treated as if it were a kind of bookkeeping. Instead of saying, “This statement is true, that one is false,” a logician could say, “This statement takes the truth value ‘true,’ that one takes the truth value ‘false.’” In effect, it reduced reasoning to manipulation of labeled tokens. That vocabulary then carried over into later symbolic logic, computer science, and formal semantics.
A Fairly Accurate Description
Once the terminology is unpacked, it is accurate enough: valid syllogistic patterns do preserve truth from premises to conclusion. But the language conceals the psychological reality that people do not ordinarily think in terms of “truth values.” They think in terms of assertions being right or wrong, matching or failing to match the world. The jargon creates an impression of technical distance, but it names what is basically a familiar pattern. But at some point, scholars recognized that it's not truth value that gets preserved. It's binary symbol assignment. So it could be A and B. It could be 0 and 1. It could be T and F. It wouldn't matter. We have preserved the symbol assignment through patterns that produce regularity. What came to be described as truth preservation can just as well be described as the preservation of binary assignments.
From Truth to Symbol
Once logicians formalized reasoning, they realized that the system does not care whether the symbols stand for “true/false,” “yes/no,” “0/1,” or “A/B.” The machinery only requires a stable twofold distinction. What is really preserved in the patterns is consistency of assignment. If one starts with premises assigned the same value (say true or 1), the structure ensures the conclusion receives the matching assignment.
The Regularity of Patterns
This shift reveals that logic is about regularity of symbol manipulation rather than about truth itself. The system works because rules of combination respect the assignments. For example, if a pattern requires that anything in class A is also in class B, then any symbol assigned to A must carry over to B. The relation is preserved independent of whether A or B correspond to something real in the world.
The Abstraction Away from Reality
At this point, logic ceases to be directly about truth in the ordinary sense. It becomes a formal calculus for manipulating labels according to fixed rules. That is why modern logic and computing can function with 0s and 1s or other arbitrary symbols: the rules ensure structural preservation, not worldly truth. The vocabulary of “truth values” is a historical accident; what is essential is the binary regularity.
Why This Matters
This recognition makes clear that logical systems operate at one remove from reality. They are rule-governed games of symbol manipulation. When the symbols happen to correspond to accurate descriptions of the world, the system preserves that accuracy. When they do not, the system still functions flawlessly—but the output no longer matches reality. At some point, scholars called mathematicians started to work with more and more abstract orthography, notation. And they developed various varieties of mathematics called symbolic logic, predicate calculus, different things. I'm not sure of the technical distinctions, though there are some. Once the insight about binary assignment and formal regularity took hold, the focus shifted from everyday reasoning patterns to the invention of increasingly abstract systems of notation.
The Rise of Symbolic Systems
Mathematicians—many of them working at the boundary between philosophy and mathematics—began to treat logical reasoning itself as a subject for formalization. Instead of writing arguments in ordinary language, they replaced words with symbols and introduced precise rules for their manipulation. This gave rise to what came to be called symbolic logic.
Predicate Calculus and Its Kin
Symbolic logic further branched into varieties, the most important of which was the predicate calculus (sometimes called first-order logic). In predicate calculus, the subject–predicate structure of sentences (“Socrates is mortal”) could be represented with quantifiers like “for all” (∀) or “there exists” (∃), along with symbols for properties and relations. This allowed reasoning not just about categories (“all humans are mortal”) but about individuals, relationships, and more complex statements.
Other varieties included propositional logic, which treated whole statements as basic units joined by connectives such as AND, OR, and NOT. Later still came modal logic (reasoning about necessity and possibility), higher-order logics, and more exotic systems.
The Technical Distinctions
The distinctions among these systems are technical but broadly recognizable:
Propositional logic: works only with entire statements as true or false. Example: “It is raining OR it is sunny.”
Predicate (first-order) logic: allows variables, quantifiers, and predicates, giving much more expressive power. Example: “For every x, if x is a human, then x is mortal.”
Higher-order logics: allow quantification not only over objects but over predicates or sets themselves.
Notational Drift
With each step, the orthography—symbols, variables, quantifiers—became further removed from ordinary language. Scholars who mastered this notation could manipulate reasoning with extraordinary precision, but the systems became increasingly opaque to those without training. The more the notation complexified, the more the subject became a specialized discipline rather than a reflection of commonsense reasoning. At some point the scholars Russell and Whitehead decided to work within this tradition and prove that all mathematics is a subset of this symbolic logic and they were going and finally published on it but shortly after another scholar named Gödel showed that you could have no completely consistent system it could be proved within its own assertions or we called them axioms and mathematics just to be fancy. This is the story of Russell and Whitehead’s Principia Mathematica and Gödel’s incompleteness theorems—a decisive moment in the history of logic and mathematics.
The Russell–Whitehead Project
In the early 20th century, Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead set out to demonstrate that all of mathematics could be reduced to, and derived from, the rules of symbolic logic. Their massive work, Principia Mathematica (1910–1913), was intended as a foundation showing that arithmetic, geometry, and every branch of mathematics were simply elaborate constructions resting on a small set of logical axioms and rules of inference.
The ambition was to show that mathematics was not a collection of disparate discoveries but a single deductive system grounded in logic. This project was in line with the earlier program of Gottlob Frege, whose work Russell admired but also critiqued for logical contradictions.
The Shock of Incompleteness
The hope was that Principia would secure mathematics once and for all on firm logical foundations. But only two decades later, Kurt Gödel demonstrated that such a hope was impossible in principle.
Gödel’s incompleteness theorems (1931) showed two devastating results:
In any sufficiently rich formal system (rich enough to express arithmetic), there will always be statements that are true but cannot be proved within the system itself.
No such system can prove its own consistency from within its own axioms.
The Use of Axioms
Russell, Whitehead, and others called the starting points of their systems “axioms.” The term carried prestige from ancient geometry, but in essence an axiom is simply an assertion accepted without proof in order to build a system. Gödel revealed that no matter how carefully such axioms are chosen, a complete and self-secure system is impossible.
Implications
What began as an effort to show that mathematics was nothing more than a subset of logic ended in a recognition of inherent limitation. Symbolic logic could model vast areas of reasoning, but it could not provide a perfectly consistent, all-encompassing foundation. The dream of Principia Mathematica—to capture all mathematical truth in a closed deductive system—was undone by Gödel’s proof that such closure is impossible. I don't think Russell and Whitehead's work was undone by Gödel. That's a misunderstanding that seems to be endemic now. Their work was pretty good and self-contained. Gödel's work came 20 years later and didn't disprove anything they said. It just pointed out some limitations to what they said. And, albeit in the narrow domain of arithmetic, and in incomprehensible prose that very few logicians even understand. The common assertion—that Gödel “disproved” Principia Mathematica—is misleading.
What Russell and Whitehead Did
Principia Mathematica was a monumental achievement. It systematically developed large portions of mathematics from symbolic logic, showing that much of arithmetic and set theory could indeed be derived from logical axioms. The system was internally coherent, at least to the extent anyone could verify across its massive span, and it was rigorous in a way that had not been achieved before. Nothing in Gödel’s later work invalidated what Russell and Whitehead had written.
What Gödel Actually Showed
Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, published in 1931, came two decades later and addressed the larger philosophical hope behind projects like Principia. He demonstrated that:
No sufficiently powerful formal system (like arithmetic) can be both complete and consistent. There will always be some statements expressible in the system that cannot be proven true or false within it.
The system cannot prove its own consistency. Consistency must be assumed from the outside.
These results did not contradict the derivations in Principia Mathematica. Rather, they showed that the broader ambition—that mathematics could be fully captured as a complete, self-certifying logical system—was unattainable.
The Narrowness and Style
Gödel’s results apply specifically to systems capable of expressing arithmetic. They do not apply universally to all forms of logic or mathematics in equal measure. And his presentation was famously dense: encoded in symbolic language so abstract and compressed that even professional logicians have difficulty following the details. For most, it is not the prose but the reputation of the results that carries weight.
The Enduring Value of Principia
Far from being “undone,” Russell and Whitehead’s work remains a cornerstone in the development of modern logic and mathematics. It pushed the field toward unprecedented rigor and laid the groundwork for later formal systems. Gödel’s work is better understood as a supplement: a sobering note about the inherent boundaries of such systems, not a refutation of their content.
The Misunderstood Concept Of Proof - Proof as Persuasion
Next we get to the misunderstood concept of proof, sometimes considered by a few people to be Platonic, regardless of human understanding. That, of course, is absurd. Proof is argument. It's persuasion. It's narrative. It's storytelling. Perhaps within some narrow confines, using other methods, rarely deduction, we say, although it can be called deduction by mathematicians, but it's not really a true deductive argument in proof. It depends upon natural language as much as on actual deduction. Mathematicians say otherwise, but they're plainly wrong. It can easily be shown that they're wrong. Proof is not a Platonic object but a human practice of persuasion.
A proof is always an argument aimed at an audience. It convinces by appealing to agreed conventions of reasoning and by showing that a conclusion follows from shared starting points. Even in mathematics, where the conventions are formalized, the act of proving is communicative: it depends on someone writing, speaking, or demonstrating in such a way that others are persuaded of the correctness of the steps. Proof is not an eternal entity existing outside of human minds; it is a practice grounded in discourse.
Dependence on Natural Language
Even the most symbolic proof cannot dispense with natural language. Mathematical papers interleave symbols with explanatory sentences because the symbols alone do not suffice. Definitions must be clarified, intentions stated, and connections explained. The narrative scaffolding is what allows the audience to follow the formal part. To pretend that the symbolic skeleton alone constitutes proof is to overlook the indispensable role of ordinary language in making the reasoning intelligible.
Deduction and Its Limits
While mathematicians may insist that proof is purely deductive, in practice it rarely is. Proofs often contain heuristic steps, appeals to intuition, or diagrammatic reasoning that is later retrofitted into deductive form. Moreover, much of the persuasion comes from the overall structure of the argument, not from strict line-by-line deduction. The claim that proofs are “nothing but deduction” simplifies away the actual human work of understanding.
The Platonic Illusion
The notion that proofs exist in a Platonic realm, immune to human interpretation, is unsustainable. A proof that no one can understand does not function as a proof. It may be a valid symbolic derivation in some abstract sense, but unless it can be communicated and recognized as such, it is inert. Proof lives in the space of language, narrative, and persuasion, not in a transcendent domain.
Validity and Its Limits - Soundness and Validity Misunderstood
This really just says the patterns have been established to hold through demonstration and argument. Soundness means not just truth and falsehood, which is a common misunderstanding. It ignores the fact that soundness requires meaning. It's got to be the truth and soundness of something of meaning. Apart from that, it's irrelevant. So a valid argument is not necessarily sound.
Validity is often misunderstood. A valid argument is one in which the form guarantees that if the premises are true, then the conclusion must also be true. The emphasis is on preservation of structure, not on correspondence with reality. A valid argument can have entirely false premises and a false conclusion, and it remains valid in the technical sense. For example:
All cats are reptiles.
All reptiles are immortal.
Therefore, all cats are immortal.
This is valid because the conclusion follows the pattern, even though every statement is false. What this shows is that validity is about pattern regularity—a symbolic relation between statements—not about the truth of the statements themselves.
Soundness as Misunderstood
Soundness is commonly defined as “validity plus true premises.” Many presentations reduce it to this shorthand: if the argument form is valid and the premises are true, the conclusion is true. But this definition conceals something crucial. Soundness requires meaning.
A string of symbols, even if arranged validly and attached to statements declared “true,” does not yield soundness unless the statements mean something in the first place. Without meaningful content, “truth” and “falsehood” are empty labels. Soundness therefore depends not only on validity and truth assignment but also on the semantic grounding of the premises.
Why Meaning Matters
Consider:
All flurbs are snarts.
All snarts are wibblings.
Therefore, all flurbs are wibblings.
This is a valid pattern. If one declares the premises “true,” it is technically sound in the textbook sense. Yet without meaning, the exercise is irrelevant. Soundness, to matter, requires that the premises connect to something interpretable—an actual domain of reference. Soundness is not just about truth-values but about truth-values applied to meaningful assertions.
The Distinction in Practice
The widespread misunderstanding is to treat soundness as if it were an entirely formal property. It is not. Validity is purely formal: it is about whether the pattern holds.
